The Crescent City Police Department is asking the District Attorney’s Office to file assault charges against a local man who allegedly punched another man during a recreation league softball game.

The incident took place Aug. 27 when James Wood, 30, was running to home plate and was met with a punch by Lance Scribner, 38, who was playing catcher, Police Chief Doug Plack said.

Wood played for Sea-A-Rama; Scribner played for Clearly Winning.

The incident occurred after Wood had collided with the third baseman for Clearly Winning, Plack said.

Wood was treated and released from Sutter Coast Hospital later that night.

“Both teams had their own version of what had transpired, whether it was intentional or not,” said Plack. “Numerous interviews were conducted from several individuals who were present during the softball game.”

Del Norte Recreation coordinator Jon Horner conducted an investigation as well, and after the conclusion of both probes it was deemed appropriate to file the request for charges to the DA’s Office, Plack said.
