Meet city, county candidates

An overview of candidates for the Crescent City Council and Del Norte County Board of Supervisors District 1 runoff election on Nov. 6:

Crescent City Council

Six candidates are vying for three positions on the Crescent City Council in the Nov. 6 General Election. They include incumbents Kathryn Murray, Donna Westfall and Rick Holley, as well as Dennis Sutton, Ron Gastineau and Joseph Aliotti.

The information on this page was submitted by the candidates. Joseph Aliotti did not respond to the request for information.

All registered voters who live within the Crescent City limits are eligible to cast ballots in this race, and the top three vote-getters win.

Ron Gastineau, 46

Occupation: Business services consultant with the Del Norte Workforce Center and Rural Human Services.

Education: Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism with emphasis in public relations from Humboldt State University.

Government offices held: Business Improvement District Board, 2006-2007; Crescent City Planning Commission, January 2010 to present.

Volunteer work: Fourth of July parade route beautification and parade sound system at 3rd and H streets. Assisted with Christmas tree lighting, Halloween parade and Museum Night Walking Tour. Design work on posters for American Red Cross, Smith River Days and Crescent City Triathlon.

How long in Del Norte County: Born here, graduated Del Norte High in 1984; moved to Arcata to attend HSU and work; moved back in 1991.

Biggest issue facing City Council: Balancing the city budget while not cutting services or jobs.

Rick Holley, 60

Occupation: Retired director of human resources for Del Norte County Unified School District.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in social welfare with an emphasis in corrections from California State University, Sacramento. Includes one year of international study at the University of Florence, Florence, Italy.

Government offices held: Appointed to City Council on Jan. 23, 2012. Personnel commissioner for Personnel Commission/Del Norte Schools, 1987-1994.

Volunteer work: Past board member, Court Appointed Special Advocates; volunteer, Hospice of Del Norte, Del Norte United Way. Board member, Del Norte Senior Center.

How long in Del Norte County: 33 years.

Biggest issue facing City Council: Budget. The city will need to maintain essential services and address infrastructure concerns in a time of decreased revenues and increasing costs. New efficiencies and grant resources need to be identified and pursued. Serious communications with community partners (businesses and other public agencies) will be essential.

Kathryn Murray, 58

Occupation: Social worker/director

Education: A considerable amount of college, but no degree. Working toward bachelor’s degree in the human services arena.

Government offices held: Crescent City Council, 2008 to present, current mayor.

Volunteer work: Del Norte Resource Advisory Committee; California League of Cities Redwood Empire Division; Del Norte Child Care Council Board of Directors; Del Norte County Grand Jury; Aleutian Goose Festival; Tall-Masted Ships; Northern California Association of Non-Profits Steering Committee; Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness Board of Directors.

How long in Del Norte County: 20 years

Biggest issue facing City Council: Balancing the budget while keeping necessary services and maintaining our infrastructure and a skilled team for the city.

Dennis Sutton, 64

Occupation: Verizon Wireless Dish Network. 

Education: Bachelor of Science in business administration, Chico State University.

Government offices held: None.

Volunteer work: Served with the Crescent Fire Protection District since 1976 and was on the Del Norte County Library Board for 10 years.

How long in Del Norte County: Born here and lived here most of my life.

Biggest issue facing City Council: To work within its budget. The Council faces budget and infrastructure problems. It has to work with the money it has.

Donna Westfall, 65

Occupation: Medi-Cal specialist for long-term care, real estate investor.

Education: Some college, UCLA tax academy, Life Underwriting Training Council Fellowship.

Government offices held: Crescent City Council, 2008 to present.

Volunteer work: Measure A, a moratorium on removing fluoride from water; worked on statewide initiative for labeling food products made with genetically modified organisms; Tri Agencies Economic Development; Del Norte Solid Waste Super Committee; Intergovernmental Relations Committee.

How long in Del Norte County: Five years.

Biggest issue facing City Council: Economy and its side effects — lack of jobs, businesses closing, inflation, etc.

Board of Supervisors

After a three-way primary last June, challenger Roger Gitlin and incumbent Leslie McNamer advanced to a runoff in the Nov. 6 General Election for the District 1 seat on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors.

The information on this page was submitted by the candidates. All registered voters who live within District 1 can cast ballots in this election. District 1 includes precincts 1, 2 and 3 and generally covers outlying areas north and east of Crescent City. Both candidates attended the Triplicate forum on Oct. 4. Roger A. Gitlin, 65

Occupation: Educator (retired in 2010, substitute teaches in Del Norte).

Education: California State University Northridge, BA Communications; National University, Multi Subject CLAD Teaching Credential, licensed California Real Estate Broker.

Government offices held: None.

Volunteer work: Del Norte Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Commission, Sunrise Rotary, St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society.

How long in Del Norte County: Three years.

Biggest issue facing supervisors: Quality of life/the economy. Good-paying private sector jobs that require an environment friendly to small business. Recovering and accessing Del Norte County’s local resources, which require government to get out of the way of expanding business. Lower taxes, fees and assessment burdens on residents.

Leslie McNamer, 63

Occupation: Incumbent county supervisor.

Education: Some college. California real estate license.

Government offices held: Del Norte County Board of Supervisors, District 1, 2004 to present.

Volunteer work: Area 1 Agency on Aging, Bar-O-Boys Ranch Oversight Committee, Boys and Girls Club of the Redwoods, Del Norte-Crescent City Chamber of Commerce, Del Norte Senior Center Board, Redwood Coast Transit, Safe and Healthy Families.

How long in Del Norte County: 63 years.
