The recent Smith River National Recreation Area cleanup event was a great success, with 3,750 pounds of garbage collected.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, 23 volunteers donned work gloves to remove illegally dumped garbage from the NRA.

Items hauled away included mattresses, tires, televisions, household garbage, construction debris, barbed wire, toilets and batteries.

This cleanup was funded by the Del Norte Resource Advisory Committee and organized and supported by the Smith River Alliance, the North Coast Gun Owners Association, and the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority.

Volunteers included AmeriCorps Mentors and participants of all ages. Special appreciation goes to Sacred Grounds, Los Bagels, the North Coast Co-op, Bien Padre, Casa Lindra Salsa, Harvest Natural Foods, and Annabelle Walkley and Aurice Eaton for generously donating food and beverages.
