Warrior Memories: Ron Gastineau was champion for Del Norte

As a former Warrior player, former Warrior coach and now an avid Warrior fan, it is always exciting when names of players from the past that I had the privilege of working with come up and spark really pleasant memories.

When I see the name Ron Gastineau, I immediately think championship football. Ron is a 1984 Del Norte High School graduate who was an excellent athlete while wearing the Blue and Gold of the Warriors. I think championship football because Ron was an important member of the 1982 Warrior football team that won the first league championship in 20 years and was the first football team from Del Norte to make it to the Northcoast Section playoffs.

The Warriors lost that game on a stormy night in Santa Rosa to the team that went on  to win the section championship. In Ron’s senior year  he continued to show his outstanding play on the line and his leadership caused his teammates to elect him one of the captains of the football team. Ron was also one of those who took his talents from the football field to the gym as soon as football season ended.

A real good example of the respect that Ron’s classmates had for him is when he was elected vice-president of his class in both his freshman and sophomore years. Ron was also elected student body president in his senior year. When I ask Ron what his favorite memory as a Warrior is, he said it was intercepting a pass in the section championship game against Cardinal Newman and almost breaking away for a touchdown.

After graduation he went to Humboldt State University, where he played on the Humboldt State Hogs lacrosse team. The highlight of this competition was traveling to Los Angeles and defeating the University of Southern California lacrosse team. Little HSU beat the great USC, a good memory.

Ron still plays in the alumni games at Humboldt, even though he is 46 and has had a hip replacement.

Ron and his wife, Carina, have two children, twins Alex and Zara, both Warrior graduates.

Ron has always been involved in community activities that support Crescent City and will always be a loyal Warrior supporter. He is the kind of young man that would make any parent proud.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was football head coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
