Boys beat Illinois Valley behind Gruden’s 22 points; girls 1-1 in UkiahThe Del Norte High girls basketball team will play for the consolation championship at the Ukiah Tournament today. The Warriors began the tournament Thursday with a 45-34 loss to Acalanes High of Lafayette. The Dons outscored Del Norte 21-9 in the third quarter to control the game. Brittany Maready’s 13 points led the Warriors. “We had a terrible third quarter,” Del Norte head coach Mike Ernest said. “Bad passes, lot of open shots (missed). We were making a lot of fundamental errors.” The Warriors (6-3 overall) turned around Friday night and defeated Tomales High, 46-18. Maready had 14 points and senior Emma Card chipped in 11 points in the rout. “We did execute better,” Ernest said, “but we didn’t execute as well as I thought we should. We have the potential but haven’t proven anything yet.” The Warriors take on an opponent to be determined at 3 p.m. in Ukiah. The Del Norte High boys basketball team rebounded from an overtime loss to Brookings-Harbor High on Wednesday night with a Thursday night road victory over Illinois Valley High of Cave Junction, 52-46. Sophomore Josh Gruden led the Warriors (3-4 overall) with 22 points as the Cougars’ comeback attempt from 13 points down in the fourth quarter fell short. “They came out with a little more passion, a little more desire,” Warriors coach Blaine Lopez said. “Defensively, they did a much better job.” Del Norte’s boys and girls teams both take on Eagle Point (Ore.) High Monday. The varsity games begin at 7 p.m. (girls) and 8:30 p.m. (boys). |
