Warriors travel to Brookings for 5 p.m. meet vs. Bruins, Sutherlin

The Del Norte High wrestling team scored 16 points to finish 30th out of 35 teams at the Grants Pass Winter Kickoff wrestling tournament in Grants Pass on Dec. 14–15.

None of the 16 Del Norte wrestlers competing placed among the top eight in their respective weight classes. Junior Eric Turner, wrestling at 182 pounds, finished 2-1 in his three Friday matches but was knocked out early on Saturday. Senior Ryan Gomes — wrestling at 160 pounds as part of a Warriors junior varsity contingent —won all three of his Friday matches before falling ill and choosing not to compete on Saturday.

“There were a lot of state-ranked kids and a few nationally ranked kids at the tournament,” Del Norte head coach Aaron Schaad said. “The kids wrestled up to the caliber (of competition).”

The Warriors were unable to bring a larger squad to Grants Pass due to injuries and illness to other wrestlers, according to Schaad.

Del Norte has picked up one final match in the 2012 calendar year, a meet at Brookings-Harbor High School today at 5 p.m. The meet will follow dual-meet scoring between the Warriors, the Bruins and fellow entrant Sutherlin (Ore.) High.

“We agreed to go simply for the matches, to get a couple close to home,” Schaad said. “It’s a chance for the kids to come back, check their weight and compete.”

The Warriors will continue practicing over the next couple weeks — with three scheduled days off for holiday observance — in preparation for a Jan. 4–5 tournament in Anderson, described by Schaad as a “section-level tournament.”

“It really gauges how we’re going to do in the postseason,” he said.
