DN girls, led by Emma Card’s 12 points, fall against Crusaders Friday

St. Mary’s High of Medford, Ore. proved resilient against the Del Norte boys basketball team, coming back from a 13-point deficit to within four points.

The Warriors, however, closed out the Crusaders by making free throws down the stretch, hitting 15 of 16 attempts in a 22-point fourth quarter to win 59-47 at the Bandon Dunes Holiday Classic Friday afternoon in Bandon, Ore.

“It’s funny; they’re hard to figure out,” Del Norte head coach Blaine Lopez said of his team. “If we could put a whole game together, it’s nice to see.”

The Warriors (5-5 overall) turned in a strong performance in the first half, jumping out to an 11-4 first-quarter lead and withstanding a brief Crusaders rally to take a 26-16 lead into the halftime locker room.

Doug Ovick scored 14 points to lead the Warriors, and Steven Maready added 10 points as the team never once trailed.

Del Norte plays the winner of Jefferson High (Independence, Ore.) and Bandon High in the championship game today at 6:30 p.m., to be held at Bandon High School. The result of the game was unavailable at press time.

Earlier Friday, Emma Card scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Del Norte High girls basketball team lost to St. Mary’s of Medford, 46-36.

The Warriors trailed by as many as 10 points early but battled back in the second and third quarters, taking the lead for short stints.

In the fourth quarter, the Crusaders outscored Del Norte 16-9 to put the game on ice.

“We just basically missed shots and didn’t compete (at the beginning of the game),” Warriors coach Mike Ernest said. “At the end of the game, I put on our board, 0-5 ... we’re 0-5 against playoff teams (in Oregon and California) and 7-0 against teams we should beat. That’s what you’re judged by as a program.”

Del Norte (7-5 overall) plays the loser of Jefferson High and tournament host Bandon High today at 3 p.m. The Jefferson-Bandon game result was unavailable at press time.
