DN unemployment rate increases

Del Norte County’s preliminary November jobless rate rose 0.6 percentage points to 12.9 percent in November, but it was still the lowest November post-recession rate since 2009, with the highest in November 2010 at 13.8 percent.

The year-ago November 2011 rate was 13.1 percent. The comparable, not seasonally adjusted California rate (9.6 percent) is down 0.2 percent from the previous month, according to the state’s Labor Market Information Division.

Del Norte has the 15th highest jobless rate among the 58 counties statewide. Some surrounding county rates include Siskiyou (14.0 percent), Shasta (11.7 percent), Trinity (14 percent), and Humboldt (9.5 percent).

Marin (5.8 percent) has the lowest November rate and Imperial County the highest (26.6 percent). The comparable U.S. rate is 7.4 percent, down 0.1 percentage point over the month.

Total Del Norte industry employment decreased by 180 positions over the month with 100 farming jobs lost as the industry downsized for the season.

Since last year, growth has occurred in professional and business services (plus20); private educational and health services (20); other services (10) and government (60).

Besides farming, since last year job losses occurred in trade, Transportation & Utilities (minus 30); financial activities (10) and leisure and hospitality (20).
