Raymond A. Heaps, 87, of Crescent City, entered his eternal life with his Heavenly Father on December 29, 2012, in Redding, Calif., after a brief illness. He was born to Alexander and Katherine Heaps, April 27, 1925, in Boone, Iowa. After high school graduation, 1943, Ray served in the Army. Ray was a successful automobile service station proprietor in an era when full service was the rule.

After 40 combined years of business in Boone, Iowa, and Whittier, Calif., he retired to Crescent City in 1990 to begin what he described as the best years of his life, which included being involved with his grandsons, the Del Norte Senior Center, Grace Lutheran Church, acquaintances and friends, especially Gene Rump. He was a recognized icon at different Crescent City businesses, namely, Ray’s Market and Rite Aid, where the employees fondly considered him one of their own. Ray was involved with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Laborers for Christ organization, helping with the construction of four Midwest church projects in the 1990’s, finding great satisfaction in helping this organization.

Ray is survived by his son, Brian (Kim), and grandsons Joel and Mark; daughter Michelle (William); daughter Lori (James), grandson Zechariah (Amy), great-granddaughters Abigail, Hannah, and Chloe; and granddaughter Michelle.

A memorial service will be held in honor of Ray on Friday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, Crescent City. He will be buried at the Northern California Veteran’s Cemetery, Igo, Calif. Donations can be made to Grace Lutheran Church or the Del Norte Senior Center.
