A standoff that resulted in no arrests unfolded at about 5 p.m. Monday in southeast Crescent City after a sheriff’s deputy was flagged down and told of a fight occurring at the end of Union Street.

The officer encountered a man holding an ax and another holding a knife, said sheriff’s Commander Bill Steven. He held both of them at gunpoint, then heard a gunshot in a nearby trailer, Steven said.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol and other sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene.

They eventually made contact with a man in the trailer, who allegedly shot the gun. A dispatch operator was also communicating with him by phone. After about 30 minutes, during which authorities tried to talk the man out of the trailer and ensure he was no longer carrying the gun, he came out.

The man claimed he had been assaulted, Steven said.

Since the man did not want to cooperate with officers or identify anyone else involved, authorities did not make any arrests, Steven said, adding no one was injured.
