Obituary: Jack Lavaughn Markel (Aug. 23, 1931 – Feb. 24, 2013)

Jack Lavaughn Markel was born in Mitchell, Neb., to Wayne Hobbs Markel and Thelma Mae Kelley Markel on August 23, 1931. The family moved to Wolf Creek, Ore., where he graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1950. He served in the United States Air Force, S.A.C., in England. He earned a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. 

Jack married Mary Louise Peabody in 1956, and they moved to Crescent City soon after. Jack worked in the truck shop for Simpson Timber Company in Klamath for 20 years, making a home for his family in Klamath and later in Crescent City. He began in the parts department and worked up to be the shop foreman before he retired. He was proud to be a
P.E.R. of the Elks Lodge #1689 here in Crescent City. Jack worked for a short time as a security guard in the early 1990s. During his life, Jack enjoyed hunting, bowling and golf. He commercially fished with his small boat, the Mar-Lu, for several years.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and soul mate, Mary L. Markel, his brother Donald E. Markel, and his sister, Bonita Moore. 

Jack is survived by his brothers Wayne Markel (Hope) of Crescent City and Leon Markel of Glendale Ore. Jack is also survived by his three daughters, Teri Card (Jim) of Maine, Colleen Gurney (Gene) of Brookings, Ore., and Kathy Buckley (Mark) of Crescent City. Jack was proud of his eight grandchildren: Karissa Mandile (Christopher) of Rhode Island; Tessa Campbell (Eric) of Arcata, Calif.; Guy Card of Maine; Nickolas Gurney of Beaverton, Ore.; Christopher Gurney (Marla) of Brookings; Mariah Gurney of Brookings; Dale Buckley (Carly) of Ft. Lewis-McCord, Wash.; and Katherine Buckley Harvey (Nick) of Windsor, Calif. He was honored with two great-granddaughters, Natalie Louise Mandile and Mary Ann Buckley. Also surviving Jack are his nephews, his nieces and their families.

Memorial services will be held at the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge, 359 H Street, Crescent City on Tuesday, March 5, at 4 p.m. The family prefers contributions to the BPOE Elks #1689, PO Box 596, Crescent City, CA 95531 or one’s favorite charity.
