DN boys tennis defeats Crusaders

The Del Norte High boys tennis team opened its season with a win over St. Bernard’s Catholic High on Saturday morning at Del Norte High School.

The Warriors won two of the three contested singles matches but lost the lone contested doubles match in a 7-2 victory. St. Bernard’s forfeited five matches due to a lack of players.

Blair Westbrook, Del Norte’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Sam Yang of St. Bernard’s in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. Doug Ovick recorded the Warriors’ second victory on the day by defeating James Lu of the Crusaders, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 3 singles match.

Fleming Cen of St. Bernard’s defeated Del Norte’s Alec Westbrook, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles match. Cen and Yang beat Blair and Alec Westbrook in the doubles match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Del Norte (1-0) hosts North Coast Prep of Arcata at 3:30 p.m. today. The Warriors play their first road match of the season Thursday afternoon at Arcata High.
