Celso “Sal” Garcia
Celso “Sal” Garcia passed away quietly at home on March 30, 2013.

Born in Pomona, Calif., on October 27, 1944, he started life with heart problems that plagued him throughout his life. He was born a “Blue Baby.” At the age of 5, he had a new (at the time) heart surgery that saw immediate positive effects for young Celso. This would not be the last of the heart surgeries for him though, as he had another surgery at the age of 15. The doctors told him that he probably would not have a long life due to his ongoing heart issues, also being told he’d never have a family, but he lived another 53 years — well past the doctors’ expectations — and started a family in 1979. He truly was a miracle.

He retired after 23 years from Xerox in Pomona, Calif., after which he and his family relocated to Del Norte County around 1991. He recently retired after 10-plus years of dealing blackjack at Lucky 7 Casino in Smith River.

There was nothing more important to Sal then spending time with his four favorite people, his four grandchildren. Whether it was playing in the backyard, watching them play sports or even getting on a ride with them at the County Fair, spending as much time as he could with them was what made life worth living for him.

Sal is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Theresa; his three sons and their spouses, Jesse, Freddie and Alana, Rudy and Leigha; his brother, sister and their spouses, Mike and Lupe Garcia, Nancy and Robert Trejo, as well as Frank and Gloria Perez and their family; his four grandchildren, Isabella, Rudy Jr., Gabriella and Lucy; also his mother-in-law Sylvia Hernandez, brother and sisters-in-law Mary (Tunie) and Johnnie Rodriguez, Grace Juaregui, Danniel and Mary Hernandez, Michael Hernandez, David and Jackie Hernandez, Frank and Tracy Hernandez, Anna and Juan Lopez, Robert Hernandez, and Tina and Elloy Navarro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Santos (Sonny) and Juana (Jenny), father-in-law Pedro Hernandez, brothers Tony and Rudy, sister Mary Helen, and brothers-in-law Vidal (Danny) Juaregui and Steven Hernandez.
