Sarah Pearson won a total of $1,600 in scholarships and  the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Del Norte for 2014 in the annual contest Saturday night.

Thirteen Del Norte High School juniors competed in the event sponsored by the Jaycees in a packed Crescent Elk Auditorium.

“Everything went really well this year,” said program director Barbara Lopez, who has been involved with DYW (formerly Junior Miss)  for 12 years, this being her first year as director.

“The girls were so gracious, so poised and talented and were so thankful for everything,” Lopez said. “They overcame their fears and became friends. They are such sweethearts. We’re like a big family.”

In addition to earning the $1,000 top scholarship, Pearson also won two of the six individual categories, Judges’ Interview (worth $300) and Self-Expression (also $300).

She will compete at the state level later this summer in Bakersfield with 100 other DYW winners from California.

Other Del Norte scholarship winners from Saturday night include:

• Guadalupe Gonzalez, First Runner-up ($600) and Talent winner ($300).

• Kayla Cain, Second Runner-up ($400) and Scholastic winner ($300).

• Kira Standring, Third Runner-up ($300).

• Halie De Arman, Fitness winner ($200).
