Del Norte 4-H: Calf showing: Do it with the children

By Submitted May 29, 2013 02:50 pm

The Del Norte County 4-H column runs monthly. Today’s was submitted by Stephanie Alexandre.

It’s not too early to think about participating with the Alexandres in a fun experience of showing a baby calf at Show Day on Aug. 3.

This project is designed for kids 5 years old and above. Younger children must have an accompanying adult who will work with them (or an older sibling) to insure safety.

Children will use a calf born at Alexandre Dairy. The children will learn how to work with a calf, train it to walk with a halter and learn other aspects of a dairy farm at the meetings. The calves will remain in the care of Alexandre Dairy.

The first meeting will be held Thursday, June 20, at 5:30 p.m. We will have weekly meetings on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. during the summer. The last meeting will be held on July 25 and Show Day is Aug. 3, at noon, at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.

This is a free project. Participation at Show Day is not mandatory, but encouraged.

Stephanie Alexandre will be the leader and there will be several experienced 4-H “junior/teen leaders” to help.

This is a true “hands-on” learning experience. Parents need to be prepared to help their child work with their baby calf and get dirty. The calves can be frisky at this age. Kids and parents are welcome (and encouraged) to come to the dairy at any time to work with their calf after the first meeting.

Call Stephanie with any questions at 487-1002. Sign up and choose your calf at the first meeting.
