Cloudy skies with a chance of showers is forecast for the first day or two of the 73rd Azalea Festival scheduled from today through Monday in the Brookings area, but sunshine is expected to prevail come the weekend.

Hundreds of volunteers have been preparing for the festival for weeks, said event organizer Les Cohen, of the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

He was still waiting to hear from the Oregon National Guard about whether there is going to be jet fighter flyover during Monday’s veterans’ memorial service.

There are no major changes to this year’s festival, except for the addition of a half-marathon during Sunday’s Azalea Festival Run. The event begins with a free Kids Dash at 8:30 a.m. at Brookings-Harbor High School  track field, followed by a 10K run and half-marathon at 10 a.m. Registration begins 45 minutes before the event.

The Azalea Festival parade on Chetco Avenue (Highway 101) will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the north end of Brookings and end at Azalea Park.

The Azalea Festival Art Show will feature more than 300 pieces by local artists, he said.
