Mary Ellen Brown
After 92 years of living her faith, loving her family and friends and serving her community, Mom went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2013. She was surrounded by family when she passed. She was born in Lincoln Valley, N.D., on August 18, 1920, to Jake and Emily Schwartz. Mom was the oldest of three children, who would remain close their entire lives. Before her second birthday Mom and her parents moved to Startup, Wash. She graduated in 1938 from Sultan High School, married John Brown in 1941, and they had two daughters while living in Washington. In 1954, the family moved to Crescent City.

Mom’s life was always her family. Her love and friendship to others will be with us forever. She was a faithful member of the Crescent City United Methodist Church for 57 years. Throughout her life she was involved in the Brownies, Girl Scouts, volunteering in her daughter’s schools, TOPS, Emblem Club, The Del Norte Historical Society and Women’s Club. In Crescent City, Mom worked at the Greyhound Bus Station, Pacific Motor Motel, The Koffee Kup (at the time of the tidal wave) and for 20 years at Endert’s Drug Store as the pharmacy clerk.

She is survived and dearly missed by her daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Richard Cox of Crescent City and Nancy and Patrick Newman of Bass Lake, Calif.; granddaughters Deanna and Pat Russell of Crescent City, Andrea Sellers of Anderson, Calif., and Jim Sellers of Concord, Calif.; great- grandchildren Ashley Russell of Napa, Calif., Kaitlyn Russell of Capitola, Calif., Sarah Russell of Crescent City and Spencer Sellers of Anderson, Calif. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents; John, her husband of 59 years; siblings Elsie McDonald and Ed Schwartz and son-in-law Mel Schwab.

The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to Lynette Warnke, her husband Trev and daughter Olivia of the Hazel House in Brookings, Ore., where Mom was residing at the time of her passing. Mom is happily with the Lord now, but will remain always in our memories and hearts.

A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at the Crescent City United Methodist Church, 664 H Street, with Pastor Carol Layton officiating on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 11a.m.

In Mom’s memory, donations may be made to the Crescent City United Methodist or the one’s favorite charity.
