Injuries not serious after ‘unprovoked’ inmate assault

An inmate at the Del Norte County Jail attacked a correctional officer Saturday morning, authorities said.

The inmate stabbed the officer in the neck with a pencil, leaving marks, but the officer’s shirt prevented further damage, sheriff’s Commander Bill Steven said.

The attack happened around 7 a.m. in one of the housing units.

“It was completely unprovoked,” said Steven.

The inmate was then Tasered and subdued by officers, Steven said.

The officer who was stabbed was treated for minor injuries, Steven said.

Brian H. Martinez, 36, of Crescent City, could now face new charges on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a peace officer, battery causing serious bodily injury and obstruction, Steven said.

Martinez was in jail for possession of a dangerous weapon.
