Jason Matthew Joy was born on December 20, 1973, in Crescent City and died at his family home in Crescent City on June 26, 2013. Jason spent most of his life in Del Norte County. He spent two years as a resident of Grants Pass, Ore., and recently moved back to California after living in Arizona for the last year.

He attended elementary and high school in Del Norte County. He played four years with the youth football team and played on the championship team, the Colts, in 1986. He worked for Walmart for the last 11 years. He was a hard worker and moved into an assistant manager position shortly after being hired.

He loved watching sports, with his favorite teams being the Raiders, Celtics and Braves. His car was his passion and he loved playing loud music while cruising up to the river to spend a day in the sun with his children. His three children were the most important part of his life. He recently became a grandfather and was happy that he could spend time holding his month-old granddaughter, Ellianna. Jason was a good-hearted man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Jason is survived by his daughter, Alicia (Crescent City); son, Matthew (Peoria, Ariz.); daughter, Kaylynn (Crescent City); granddaughter, Ellianna Johnson (Crescent City); sister, Holly Bratcher (Vacaville, Calif.);, father Larry and step-mother Anita (Crescent City); and grandfather Earl Kunkel (Brookings, Ore.). Jason was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Joy; grandfather, William Joy; and grandmother, Bonnie Armendariz. He will be interred with his grandmother, Mary Joy, who helped raise him from the age of two after his mother passed away.

A graveside memorial will be held on July 6, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Del Norte Youth Football, PO Box 1277, Crescent City, CA  95531.
