Obituary: Garnet Ann DeLain (Sept. 15, 1938 – July 10, 2013)

Garnet DeLain, 74, passed away on July 10, 2013, at Ocean Park in Brookings, Ore. She was born in Seaside, Ore., to Ina May Dyer and George Ireland and was the youngest of four children.

Garnet was a longtime resident of Del Norte County. She moved to Crescent City in 1950. In 1956 she married James Edward Coopman and they had two sons, Terry James Coopman (1959–1971), and Thomas Lee Coopman, who was born in 1961. After the passing of Garnet’s first husband in 1988, she was remarried to Richard Albert DeLain in 1992.

Many knew Garnet from her working 31 years at the same bank throughout the transitions between UCB, First Interstate, Wells Fargo, and Tri Counties Bank. She retired in 2000. Prior to working at the bank, she worked at Ben Franklin for 13 years starting in 1957. Garnet belonged to the Emblem Club, ABWA, and the Birthday Club.

Garnet is survived by her son Thomas Coopman of Crescent City; her three grandchildren, Katy Coopman, Terry Coopman, and Chloe Coopman; niece Kathy Bass; nephews Jim Coriell and Wesley Velez; three step-children, Raymond DeLain, David DeLain, and Mary Rice; sister-in-law Marie DeLain Velez; brother-in-law Leo Velez; and supportive friends Jean Robson, Merle Melhoff, Gini Luster, Joyce Line and Glenna.

Family and friends are welcome to attend graveside services at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the Del Norte County Veteran’s Cemetery. In celebration of Garnet’s life please join us immediately after at the VFW Hall (810 H St.) for a potluck.
