Changes are in store for Del Norte County’s chapter of the American Red Cross this fall.

After 14 years as executive director, Dave Bosteder said he plans to retire to spend more time with his grandson. When that happens the Del Norte County and Humboldt County chapters will merge to become the Humboldt-Del Norte Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Bosteder said his last day will be Oct. 4.

“The volunteers will still be here,” he said. “The office will still be here, but the (chapter) will be administered out of Humboldt.”

The Humboldt-Del Norte Red Cross merger coincides with an overall reorganization of the American Red Cross, Bosteder said. By moving the chapter’s primary office to Eureka, the organization won’t have to pay for an additional executive and can save money on any office work that’s necessary, he said.

Barbara Caldwell, who has been executive director of the Humboldt County chapter for nine years, will serve as executive director for the consolidated chapter, according to a Red Cross press release.

Once through the transition, the consolidated chapter will be represented by board members from both Del Norte and Humboldt counties, said board member Mary Dorman.

“We end up helping each other out any way,” she said. “When they’ve had disasters, we’ve sent volunteers down, and when we’ve had disasters, they’ve sent volunteers up.”

Throughout his 14 years as executive director of the Del Norte chapter, Bosteder said he has seen the Red Cross’s services grow. During that time, the local office moved from 9th Street to Northcrest Drive.

He said he’s also proud of the Red Cross’s response to the 2011 tsunami.

“We were able to open up four shelters without any outside assistance,” Bosteder said. “That’s a pretty fabulous accomplishment.”

Bosteder received a Red Cross award for excellence in 2011, a national award that recognized his leadership in disaster response, training and commitment to the community.
