Obituary: John William Barkhurst (Nov. 3, 1933 – Aug. 30, 2013)

John William Barkhurst, husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, went home to be with his Lord on Aug. 30, 2013, after a long illness. 

John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bertha M. Barkhurst and U.S. Army Sergeant Theodore O. Barkhurst of Sun City, Calif., and brother Otis Dean Bud Barkhurst of Anaheim, Calif.  

John’s family includes his wife of 43 years, Karen F. Barkhurst of Crescent City;  son John O. Barkhurst of Long Beach, Calif.; daughter and husband Roxanne and Brian Greenough of Crescent City; son Jon Burgasser of Grass Valley, Calif.; daughter and husband Beverly  Joanie and Barry Glennan of Plain City, Ohio; granddaughter and husband Michele L. and Aaron Starcher and great-grandchildren Tyler Ryan, Kyle David, Brandon Randall, Dustin Sherwood William, and Kaylyn Fay of Fortuna, Calif.; grandson Jason W. and Angela Greenough of Crescent City; grandson Matthew J. Greenough of Kodiak, Alaska; grandson PVT Second Class U.S. Army Joshua Daniel David Greenough serving in Afghanistan; granddaughter Andrea Burgasser of San Francisco, Calif.; grandson Mark Burgasser of Rocklin, Calif.; granddaughter Kaylin Glennan of Columbus, Ohio; granddaughter and husband Kari and James Jergensen and great-granddaughter Teagan of Westminster, Calif.; and grandson Kyle Glennan of Plain City, Ohio.

John was born November 3, 1933, in Rockford, Illinois. In 1936 his family moved to Lynwood, Calif., where his father took a job with Rheem’s Manufacturing. He graduated from Lynwood High School in 1950.  In 1953 John joined the Army and served for six years as PVT First Class at Presidio, Monterey, Calif. After his service in the military, John lived in Compton, Calif., where he married, raised his two children and operated Compton Imports for many years. John moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1972, where he reopened his auto repair shop. In 1977 John moved to Sun City, Calif., where he operated a nursery, and raised many farm animals including horses, pigs, chickens, rabbits and a cow.

John’s interests included spending time with his late dog Sam, auto and boat repair and restoration, woodworking, gun collecting and target shooting. John loved spending time with and visiting his family and friends and loved discussing all aspects of his faith and Bible doctrine. John was especially proud of his work at North American Aviation, where he worked on the Apollo Program. John is loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Rosary was held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel, September 4, 2013, at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial services  will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church September 5, 2013, at 10 a.m. Graveside service immediately following Mass at Crescent City Cemetery.

“Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning, and you shall be secure, because there is hope;  you shall look around you and lie down in safety, and you shall take your rest with none to disturb.” Job 11:17–19.
