The Del Norte High girls tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision at Arcata on Saturday in a match delayed by wet courts and played on a shortened weekday format due to fears of additional rain.

“The Arcata team is well-coached and ready to play,” said Warrior coach Jane Rumiano. “We’re trying to catch up with girls who have played tennis regularly for the past six months, and the girls are responding well to the challenge. Their attitudes are great and I expect them to do much better the second time we play these teams.”

“Debbie Yang had a close three-set match, while Alexis Wright had a close first set, then used good strategy to put away her opponent in the second set,” said Rumiano.

“Raili Makela moved up on the ladder to No. 4 and did well against her opponent, while Panhia Yang lost a tough pro set but played very well.

“Marine Henry, the Rotary exchange student from Belgium, played her best match ever, and Olivia Jeffcoat and Raili paired up to beat Arcata in the No. 3 doubles.”

In No. 1 singles, Del Norte’s Jordan Babich lost to Hannah Matthew, 2-6, 3-6, while No. 2 Debbie Yang lost to Hanna Burnett 2-6, 7-5, 4-6.

No. 3 Wright defeated Keani Momoa-Hugo, 7-5, 6-0, while No. 4 Makela lost to Kendall Boyett, 2-6, 3-6.

No. 5 Panhia Yang lost to Anna Nelson, 7-9, while No. 6 Henry beat Kayla Curtis, 8-1.

The No. 1 doubles team of Babich and Wright lost to  Matthew and Burnett, 4-8, while the No. 2 team of Yang/Yang lost to Momoa-Hugo/Boyett, 4-8. The No. 3 team of Makela/Jeffcoat beat Nelson/Curtis, 8-1.

Del Norte’s next match is today at home against North Coast Prep, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
