Various groups of local students will be cleaning beaches today through Saturday, and adults can get in on the action as well.

The efforts are planned in conjunction with Saturday’s 28th annual statewide Beach Cleanup sponsored by the California Coastal Commission.

In Del Norte, volunteers are still being sought to help clean up the beach along a 4-mile stretch north of Point St. George anytime Saturday. Those who are interested can contact Crescent Elk Middle School instructor Joe Gillespie at 464-0320, ext. 504.

Meanwhile, some Smith River School students will be cleaning today from the state line south to the mouth of the Smith River, while some Crescent Elk students will do the same north of the harbor, Gillespie said.

On Friday, more Crescent Elk students will clean the beach from the harbor south. Redwood students will clean on the beach north and south of Kellogg Road, and Joe Hamilton students will be on Pebble Beach, Gillespie said.

Some Del Norte High School students will get in on the action Saturday, Gillespie said.
