Crescent City resident Bernard Paul Clayburn lost control of his four-door Buick and crashed as he descended Mountain Drive toward North Bank Chetco River Road east of Brookings at about 10 p.m. Monday.

Clayburn said he was headed downhill at about 40 mph when he lost control and went airborne, flipped upside down and narrowly missed a massive tree before the car landed on its roof in the brush approximately 40 feet from the road’s edge.

Clayburn was pulled from the wreckage by members of the Brookings Fire Department, who used a hydraulic cutter to free him.

Clayburn was strapped to a backboard and tended to by medics from Cal-Ore Life Flight and then transported by ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital, where he was treated and released.
