Lois Marie Stanley Parks Poole, aged 90, died peacefully on Sept. 21, 2013. Lois was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Alex, Okla. She was the first-born daughter of Marcus L. and Edna Stanley. She was the oldest of five children.

At the age of 14, Lois and her family moved to Tulare, Calif. She attended Laurel and Buena Vista Elementary schools and graduated from Tulare Union High School in 1942.

In 1942, she married Orvel Parks in Yuma, Ariz. After their wedding, they lived in San Diego, where they welcomed the birth of their first child, Winona J. Parks Carson, in 1943. They later moved to Richmond, Calif., and eventually settled in Tulare. Their second child, Larry D. Parks, was born in 1946. Orvel passed away in 1965.

Lois married Elmer G. Poole on Sept. 4, 1968, in Reno, Nev. She welcomed his daughter, Lavon Poole Coker, into her heart and family. They lived in Crescent City for 35 years before returning to Tulare in 2003. Elmer passed away in 2004. Their 36-year marriage included domestic and international travel, dancing the jitterbug, visiting extended family and friends, and hosting many at their home for dinner parties and holiday celebrations.

Lois thoroughly enjoyed, and was well known for, her cooking. She owned two family friendly restaurants over the years — The Beachcomber of Crescent City and The Snack Shack located near Gasquet. Several of her grandchildren spent summers or vacations “working” at her restaurants and just as many probably should have been “fired.”

Fortunately, she was not only a wonderful grandmother, but was also a very forgiving “boss.”

She was a member of Emblem Club, Business Women of America, The International Order of Runeberg, TOPS Club and Tulare First Baptist Church.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Orvel Parks and Elmer Poole; her son, Larry Parks; her daughter, Lavon Poole Coker; her grandson, Michael Carson; her brothers, Edward “Bud” Stanley and Martin Stanley; and her sisters, Juanita Nielson and Patsy Oliveria.

She is survived by her daughter, Winona “Winni” (Rolon) Carson of Tulare; her grandchildren, Deanna (Ron) Zieber of San Diego; Michael (Ann) Coker of Williamsburg, Va.; David (Carol) Coker of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Darci (Victor) Westmoreland of San Diego and Michelle (Troy) Skillern of Coppell, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Lauren (Phillip) Maldonado of San Diego; Alyse Levario of Hanford, Calif.; Silas Erickson; Jake Coker and Joshua Coker of Klamath Falls, Ore.; Michaela Coker of Williamsburg, Va.; Josephine Westmoreland of San Diego and Sydney Skillern of Coppell, Texas; and her great-great-granddaughter, Sophia Levario of San Diego.

On behalf of the family, we’d like to thank the staff of Tulare Nursing and Rehab for the love and care they showed her during her final days.

Visitation was held at Peers-Lorentzen Funeral Service in Tulare on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. The funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at Peers-Lorentzen Funeral Service in Tulare. Dr. Robert Medcalf will officiate. The burial will be at Tulare Cemetery. A reception will be held at Tulare First Baptist Church following the burial.
