The Del Norte High soccer teams ran into buzz saws Wednesday night in Fortuna, with the boys losing 9-2 and the girls falling 4-0.

Afterward, girls coach Clar Byers found the most to be optimistic about, calling the girls contest “a very entertaining game with two teams battling it out.”

While the Fortuna girls led 3-0 at the half, “they had to fight for every goal,” Byers said, adding that Warrior goalkeeper Kira Standring “had some amazing saves.”

Noting that his team shut out Eagle Point 3-0 at home Monday, Byers said, “our girls have really stepped up their game.”

Boys coach David Sanyaolu wasn’t happy with how his team began its game.

“We didn’t have a good start, being overly defensive,” he said. “We got the goals by being more compact in midfield and attacking, which is our forte.

Del Norte’s goals were scored by Geovany Ramirez and Alberto Barraza (assisted by Ramirez).

“Fortuna is a very good soccer team,” Sanyaolu said. “We will keep working on improving.”

The next chances for both teams come today with home games against Arcata. The boys game begins at 11 a.m. and the girls game at 1 p.m.
