Ellen was a vital person at 81 years of age. To speak with her, you would not think that she was that age.

Ellen was employed with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office from 1970–1990 and retired with the rank of Sergeant. Ellen loved her job at the SO to the very end of her life. She pioneered the way for women in Del Norte County law enforcement. Ellen was the first female patrol officer for the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office. Her strength was impressive as she performed a job that had been typically male-oriented. Also impressive was the support that she received from the other personnel of the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, Crescent City Police, California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies. She made many lifelong friends.

Ellen’s greatest supporter was her husband, Johnnie. During her years as a Deputy Sheriff working graveyard shift, Johnnie learned to grocery shop, do laundry, cook, clean and still hold down a full-time job. Johnnie spoiled Ellen every day. They had so much mutual love and respect for each other!

Through the years, Ellen was active in many clubs and organizations, such as Business and Professional Women’s Association, Lion’s Club, Emblem Club, bowling leagues and many more. Ellen taught Junior League Bowling. Ellen also helped organize the horse shows for the Del Norte County Fair. Ellen had a passion for genealogy that will be passed on to her family.

Ellen and her husband, Johnnie, moved to Crescent City in 1959. They relocated after their retirement.

Ellen was predeceased by her husband, John, and son, Steven. Survivors include daughters Becky Chandler (Jay), Sandra Fernandes (Silverio), Lorrie Lowther Thompson (Henk); grandchildren Trisha Simonson (Grant), Clint Beasley (Meshel), John Filler (Leslie), Jimmy Filler, Paul Fernandes (Betty); 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; four brothers, two sisters and numerous extended family members and her precious companion, a French bulldog, Sofie. Ellen was very proud of the many accomplishments of all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ellen passed peacefully. There will be no services at her request. Ellen and John’s ashes will remain in the Willamette Valley that they loved, where their lives were first joined — together forever.

Your thoughts and condolences may be sent to her daughters at 1650 Parkway Dr., Crescent City, CA 95531.
