Del Norte High’s cross country teams held their only home meet of the season Wednesday at the Del Norte Golf Course.

“I think they compete a little better at home, especially the JV kids,” said cross country coach Kirk Burrows. “It is always nice for the parents to be able to come out and see their kid run.”

The Arcata boys and girls came away with the team championship in boys and girls varsity, but the Warriors were dominate in the junior varsity boys division.

Del Norte’s Garrett Galea won the boys JV race with a time of 12:03, just five seconds faster than teammate Parker Thompson, who took second place. Nicholas Jacobs also slipped into the top four with a time of 12:26.

“It was kind of encouraging for our younger kids,” Burrows said. “They got first, second and fourth in the JV race. That was good for them.”

It was just the second JV race of the season.

The Del Norte varsity girls were paced by Sabrina Bustamante, who finished 15th overall in a time of 23:18. Spring Wilson was the next Warrior across the finish line, finishing 19th overall in a time of 23:57.

Samantha Henkell was 23rd in a time of 25:40 and Samantha Ballard took 30th place in 29:06.

The Del Norte varsity boys finished in a tight pack, with Ryan Waite finishing 20th in 19:11, Hunter Mattz finishing 21st in 19:32 and Blaine Sutton taking 23rd place with a time of 20:24.

“They just keep plugging,” Burrows said. “It is a hard sport. This is the first year for a lot of the kids.”

The Warrior cross country teams will be on the road for the rest of the season. Del Norte’s next meet will be at McKinleyville on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
