Warriors run cross country in Eureka

The Del Norte cross country teams continued their steady improvement Wednesday in Eureka. The Warrior girls took third and the boys finished fourth out of eight teams.

Senior Gaudalupe Gonzalez was the top finisher for Del Norte, taking 11th place out of 33 girls with a time of 23:19. Senior Sabrina Bustamante ran a time of 25:28 for 17th.

Samantha Henkell, Spring Wilson and Samantha Ballard rounded out the Del Norte girls varsity, finishing 26th, 27th and 29th respectively.

For the boys, freshman Garrett Galea was once again the Warriors’ fastest runner, finishing 24th with fellow freshman Parker Thompson right on his heels in 25th place. Times were not available for the boys at press time.

The rest of the boys finished in a tight pack. Hunter Mattz, Ryan Waite and Graeson Cameron finished 33rd, 34th and 35th respectively with Glenn Duncan, Nicholas Jacob and Blaine Sutton coming in 37th, 38th and 39th in a field of over 50 boys.

The Warriors have one more meet this year. They will run at the Humboldt-Del Norte Championships in Fortuna on Nov. 9.

Youth football moves to playoffs

The Del Norte Youth Football program went 3-2 overall in the last week of the regular season.

The AAA Warriors beat Southern Humboldt 22-14. Del Norte earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. It awaits the winner of the Fortuna Blue-Ferndale game on Sunday. Del Norte will play Sunday, Nov. 10, at Hoopa High School.

In AA, Del Norte Blue beat Southern Humboldt 33-7. They will play Fortuna White in the first round of the playoffs at McKinleyville High School at noon Sunday. Del Norte Gold lost 39-28 to Eureka but will still have a first-round bye. Gold awaits the winner of Blue’s first-round game. The second-round game will be played Nov. 10 at Hoopa High School.

In A, Del Norte Blue ran away from Southern Humboldt with a 33-0 victory. It will play Fortuna in the first round of the playoffs Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s High School. Del Norte Gold dropped its final game 25-20 against Eureka but it still had a good enough record to earn a first-round bye. Gold will face the winner of Ferndale and Hoopa on Nov. 10 at Hoopa High School.
