Calvin B. Hildebrandt
Cal Hildebrandt passed away peacefully on Nov. 28, 2013. Born in Marion County, Ore., he spent most of his childhood in Salem and Silverton. While in high school, he was captain of the football team at Silverton High. He moved to Albany, Ore., for his senior year and graduated from there. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Force stationed in the Philippines during WWII. He then attended Oregon State College in Corvallis.

He began hauling lumber and logs in 1948. In 1952, he moved to Eureka, Calif., where he met Dorothy Odenbaugh. They were married and moved to Crescent City, Calif., in 1955. Cal owned and operated several trucks until 1963, when he sold all but one low-bed. 1964 found him particularly busy hauling after the tsunami and flood. In the mid-60s, he hauled and placed the hollow log in Beachfront Park which would be enjoyed by children of all ages for the next 45 years.

After selling his business to Simonson Lumber Company in 1974, he worked for them, including their Western Ag company, until 1988 when he retired. He then continued to take part-time driving jobs with various companies ending with Rumiano’s in 1996.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Rhoda Hildebrandt; sister Ruth Malouf and grandson Bradley Hildebrandt. He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Dorothy; children: Steven, Julie (Mike) Richcreeek, Matthew and Brian all of Crescent City; grandchildren: Jason Richcreek, Amanda Richcreek, Kelsey (David) Ford, Brianne Hildebrandt and Brittany (Lance) Lund; great-grandchildren: Adam, Katalina, Diego, Addison, Destiny, Bianca and Jacob; also, several nieces and nephews.

At his request, no services will be held. Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity in remembrance of Cal.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel, Crescent City, CA.
