A local man was arrested after he was spotted looking at child pornography inside a Crescent City coffee shop, authorities said.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy was at Java Hut in the fairgrounds parking lot Wednesday when he saw a man looking at obscene material on his laptop, said sheriff’s Commander Bill Steven.

The man had spent enough time looking at images of children that the deputy was able to snap photos of the scene as well as record a video with his cellphone, Steven said.

Lawrence G. Mason, 60, was arrested on suspicion of possession of child pornography.

He had told authorities that since it was on the Internet, it should be legal, Steven said.

Java Hut employees also witnessed Mason utilizing the shop’s wireless Internet to view child pornography, Steven said.
