Vernie Westman McBride passed away at his home in Crescent City on  Tuesday, February 18, at the age of 95 years old. He was born in Kinsing, Texas, on January 25, 1919. Vernie was a World War II veteran, having served with the Merchant Marines.

He moved to Crescent City in 1960 with his wife Laura Rachel McBride and sons Verne Westman McBride and Charles Dewey Gilbert. Vernie worked in the timber industry for 60 years.He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Vernie was always kind and quite a comedian. You could always count on him for a good joke. He will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.

Vernie was preceded in death by his parents James and Lou McBride and his wife Laura Rachel McBride in 2007.

He is survived by his sons Verne Westman McBride and Charles Dewy Gilbert; grandchildren Scott Westman McBride, Andrea McBride, Patrick McBride, Lorri Dutton, Laura Kline, Justin Riechlin and Allan Knight. He also leaves behind multiple great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at the Del Norte County Veteran’s Cemetery on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 11 a.m.
