After receiving a report of a downed plane in the ocean somewhere between Point St. George and the mouth of the Chetco River, the U.S. Coast Guard was actively searching Monday evening for signs of a pilot or aircraft.

“We have the helicopters up and they are searching,” said Paul Hofbauer, search and rescue specialist with USCG Group Humboldt Bay, which was assisting Sector North Bend with the response.

“The Coast Guard is currently looking for anybody that may have gone down in an aircraft that reportedly went down off the coast of Brookings, Oregon,” said Nate Littlejohn, spokesman for Sector North Bend on Monday evening. “We are actively searching using two MH-64 Dolphin (helicopters).”

The report indicates that it was a private plane that went down, Littlejohn said, but “we can’t even confirm that an aircraft went down.”
