A body found last weekend on national forest land near Gasquet has been identified as Sacramento-area resident Robert Essex, 52.

Autopsy results indicate Essex died of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, according to officials with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office.

Hikers came across his body Saturday near Craig’s Creek, about a mile from its confluence with South Fork Smith River.

Two days later, Essex’ truck was discovered in Crescent City in the parking lot for Fred Endert Municipal Pool, according to police dispatch logs.

“There is an investigation. There are no obvious signs of foul play, though we do continue to search for that possibility,” said sheriff’s commander Bill Steven.

Essex appeared to have been dead for less than a week and basic camping gear was found nearby, Steven said.
