Obituary: Andrew Coltra (March 14, 1921 – March 1, 2014)

Andrew Coltra was born in Madera, Calif., on March 14, 1921, to Ottavio and Palmira (Schiavini) Coltra. He passed away on March 1, 2014, in Gardnerville, Nev.

Andy attended schools in Madera County and was working toward an AA degree prior to enlisting in the Air Force, serving his country from 1942 through 1946. Following his discharge from the service Andrew moved to Humboldt County and began working for the Hammond Timber Company. Shortly thereafter he joined the Dows Prairie Grange where eventually he met the love of his life Gertrude Evangeline Turner. They were married in June 1949 and lived in Korbel and McKinleyville, Calif., until moving to Del Norte County in 1960. Andy spent most of his working life as a Saw Filer for several different mills and retiring from Miller Rellim in 1979.

Andy was an avid gardener and enjoyed raising his cattle and tending to the property. He volunteered for many years at the community food bank and was a dedicated member of the Cornerstone Assembly of God. He was proud of his family and enjoyed the large family gatherings.

Andy was preceded in death by his loving wife Gertrude and young son Patrick Cecile Coltra.

His surviving family includes: sons and their wives Danny and Roselyn Coltra, Terry and Linda Coltra, Rick and Becky Coltra and Gary Coltra. His grandchildren include: Brandon Coltra, Greg and Julia Coltra, Steven and Jessica Coltra, and Alisa (Coltra) and Cody Magana. Great-grandchildren include: Kaylee, Kaitlyn, Natalie, Brooke, Jacob, Emalie, and Amanda Coltra, and Colton Magana. There are many additional members from the Coltra and Turner families.

Visitation will be a Wier’s Mortuary Chapel on Friday, March 7, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel on Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery.
