CBS to feature Japan delegation

The story of the Del Norte High School students who traveled to Japan last month will probably be broadcast on national news tonight via the “CBS Evening News,” which airs at 5:30 p.m.

The news show interviewed the students Tuesday about their trip to Japan, which came about after a 20-foot fishing vessel that was ripped to sea from Japan during the 2011 tsunami washed to shore in Crescent City two years later.

A short documentary video about the trip to Japan produced by Facebook Stories, a project launched by Facebook to tell compelling stories involving the social media site, is now available online at vimeo.com/88625751.

The Japanese boat was traced back to a high school in Rikuzentakata, Japan, within hours of its discovery using Facebook.

Burglary attempt suspect arrested

Candice Swain, 25, was arrested on Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear in court for her alleged connection to an attempted burglary of a 72-year old Crescent City woman Jan. 8.

The would-be victim scared the burglars off after emerging from her room with a gun.

Swain, the alleged driver in the burglary, was originally arrested the day the crime took place along with Zachariah Dugan, 32, and Donald Webb, 32.

“They have a long history of victimizing the community,” Sheriff Dean Wilson said of the three when the incident originally took place.

Swain posted bail Feb. 4.
