Obituary: Thomas Camarena (November 05, 1951 – April 01, 2014)

 A life-long resident of Del Norte County, Thomas Gregory Camarena died April 1, 2014, in San Francisco, Calif. Mr. Camarena was born November 5, 1951, and was raised in Crescent City, Calif., where he went to Del Norte High School, graduating in 1969. He married his high school sweetheart, Jean Haven, in June 1970.


Mr. Camarena worked at Northcrest Chevrolet Dealership, then opened Camarena Northcrest Mobil in the early 1980’s, then operated Crescent Shell with his nephew Jeff Camarena, and later opened Camarena’s Auto Repair. He was a long-time mechanic, 35-plus years, before he retired in 2000.

He was a member of the Elks. His loves were his grandkids, his dog Quincy, drag racing, house boating and camping.

Surviving are sons Gregory T. Camarena and Brett M. and wife Michelle Camarena, of Crescent City; four grandchildren Marisa, Jordan, Matthew and Leilani, all of Crescent City; brothers Julian, Jr., and wife Carol Camarena of Crescent City, Robert and wife Rhonda Camarena of Crescent City, Jose and wife Dorothy Camarena of Crescent City, Arturo and wife Julie Camarena of Lovell, Wyo., Carlos and wife Gerd Camarena of Branson, Missouri; sister Alicia Frasier of Crescent City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean D. Camarena, parents Julian and Elizabeth Camarena, brother Gary Camarena and sister Sally Huff.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Foursquare Gospel Church, 144 Butte Street, Crescent City. Lavonne and Dave Powell officiating. Reception following with a potluck setting..
