AAU program takes 65 kids on seven teams to tournament in Oregon

The Del Norte AAU boys and girls basketball programs made a trip north to Eugene over the weekend for a round-robin tournament.

The Warriors brought 65 kids on seven different teams. All seven teams finished the weekend at 0.500 or above, and six teams placed in the top three in their divisions.

The fifth grade girls and the sixth grade girls led the Del Norte charge, both going undefeated and winning their respective age groups.

It was the sixth-grade team’s first tournament championship since the first tournament in Brookings. They have also placed second in Coos Bay.

“We have grown a lot as a group,” said Del Norte sixth grade girls coach Preston Rosalowski. “Overall, we looked good in Eugene.”

The sixth-graders steamrolled their way through the competition. They beat all five teams that they faced by a combined score of 179-41. The Lady Warriors defense was especially tough. Amity was the only team that was able to reach double digits on the scoreboard against Del Norte in their 42-12 loss. The Lady Warriors’ closest game of the tournament was a 25-6 victory over Roseburg.

“I thought it was a fun tournament for the girls. A lot of girls that normally don’t get too much playing time got to play a whole lot.”

The Del Norte eighth grade girls finished in second place in their division after going 3-1 through the tournament. The seventh grade went 2-2 overall.

There were also three Warrior boys teams that competed at the tournament. The junior varsity team ended up with a 3-1 record, which was good enough for second place. The eighth grade Warrior boys also secured a second place finish, going 4-1.

The Del Norte sixth grade boys team went 3-2 overall and finished in third place in the team standings. The Warriors got a chance to play against some difficult teams throughout the course of the weekend.

“Out of all the tournaments that we have gone to, that tournament had some of the toughest teams we have seen, for my sixth grade team anyway,” said Del Norte sixth grade head coach Frank Dowd. “Out of the Portland area they get some really good players.”

The Del Norte AAU programs will be back in action next month when they travel to Medford on May 10-11.
