Plenty of upcoming candidate forums

Del Norte County voters will have a plethora of chances to hear from candidates in the race for judge, district attorney and sheriff in these last few weeks before the June 3 election.

The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County and KEET-TV, the North Coast’s public television station, will kick off its series of forums today with Del Norte County Superior Court judge candidates Chris Doehle, Darren McElfresh and Dohn Henion.

The forums will be broadcast live on KEET-HD/113 and online at www.keet.org from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Viewers can submit questions for the candidates starting at 6:45 p.m. by calling 707-445-0811. KEET-TV’s forum series will continue on Monday with candidates Mike McGuire, Derek Knell, Lawrence Wiesner and Harry Lehman, who are running for state Senate. On Wednesday, KEET will host a third forum featuring California Assembly candidates Jim Wood, John Lowry, Matt Heath and Pamela Elizondo.

Meanwhile, the Smith River Neighborhood Watch will also host a forum on Wednesday, May 7, featuring Doehle and McElfresh as well as Del Norte County district attorney candidates Dale Trigg and Bob Drossel. Erik Apperson, who is running for Del Norte County Sheriff, will also be at the Smith River forum. The forum will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Hall on First Street.

The Smith River Neighborhood Watch held the first of its two election forums on Wednesday, featuring Del Norte County Sheriff candidates Dean Wilson, Jim Maready and Elwood “Butch” Lee. Del Norte County Superior Court judge candidate Dohn Henion was also there. Details on the candidate statements at that forum will be published in Saturday’s Del Norte Triplicate.

On May 9, KEET-TV will feature Del Norte County Sheriff candidates Apperson, Dean Wilson, Elwood “Butch” Lee and Jim Maready. 

The Del Norte Tea Party Patriots are holding a candidate fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10 at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. All local and statewide candidates are invited.

The Tea Party Patriots will host a forum featuring sheriff candidates and ballot measures from 6 to 8 p.m. May 13 in the floral building at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.

Trigg and Drossel will participate in another KEET-TV forum on May 15. The public television station will wrap up its election series on May 16 with Congressional candidates Andy Caffre, Jared Huffman and Dale Mensing.

The KEET forums will also be available after the event at archive.org, according to Karen Barnes, director of programming and content. The forums will be posted two days after the event, she said.

Meanwhile, vote-by-mail starts on Monday, according to County Elections Officer Alissia Northrup. All vote-by-mail ballots will be mailed to voters, but they can also come into the elections office in the Flynn Center at 981 H Street to obtain a ballot, she said.

Voters must register by 5 p.m. on May 19 to participate in the June 3 election.
