The Crescent City Police Department has arrested a suspect for making thousands of dollars in fraudulent credit card charges at Safeway on Saturday night.

Nhimia Mekonnen Kahsay, 19, of Santa Rosa purchased $14,000 in prepaid credit cards at the Safeway late Saturday night using a stolen credit card and false identification, Crescent City Police Sgt. Erik Apperson said.

When Safeway managers learned of the purchase on Sunday morning, they informed the Crescent City Police Department.

“The store was concerned about the size of the purchase,” Apperson said.

Kahsay returned to the Safeway on Sunday afternoon where Crescent City Police apprehended him, Apperson said.

Kahsay was booked on a charge of forgery and credit card fraud, both felonies. Kahsay’s bail was set at $10,000.
