Linda Horn, the CEO of Sutter Coast Hospital since April 2013, announced that she will be stepping down from her post after learning last week that her cancer has returned.

Horn, who is a 9-year cancer survivor, said in a statement that she planned to return home to Redding for treatment and to be near her family.

“Although it was a long journey, cancer was a blessing in my life,” Horn wrote in an email to staff, physicians and auxiliary this week. “It taught me many life lessons, and I hope I became a better person because of it. I know there is still a lot for me to learn. Each of you are very dear to me, and I wish you the very best in the future.”

Sutter Coast’s Board of Directors and Sutter Health have yet to assign a replacement for Horn, but as soon as new leadership positions are assigned, it will be announced publicly, according to a statement.

“Our commitment is to identify and secure someone to fill this position as quickly as possible; both to provide sustained stable leadership and also to ensure continuation of the important initiatives currently underway to guarantee the long-term viability of Sutter Coast Hospital,” said Mike Cohill, President, West Bay Region, Sutter Health, in a statement.

Horn was brought in to be the top executive at Sutter Coast after former CEO Eugene Suksi resigned amid the hospital’s contentious plans to dissolve its local governing board and merge with Sutter West Bay Region.

Horn’s time at Sutter Coast has included overseeing the hospital Board of Directors’ controversial decision to convert to a Critical Access Hospital, and a review with the highest marks that the hospital has ever received from the Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies health care facilities.

“We are deeply saddened by this news and wish her the very best. Linda Horn has brought a new level of compassion and dedication to our Hospital,” said Ken Hall, Chairman of the hospital Board of Directors, in a statement. “The Board of Directors will continue to communicate with this community.”
