Former Del Norte wrestler Roger “Bronc” McCovey entered the cage for his first Mixed Martial Arts fight on Saturday at the “Showdown in the Sapphire” at Blue Lake Casino in Blue Lake.

McCovey, fighting in the heavyweight division, beat previously undefeated Amir Lacy (3-1) of Dragon House MMA in San Fransisco.

“This is a great start for Roger,” said coach Tracy Yates.  “Lacy is a good fighter.”

McCovey’s MMA debut was also the debut for the recently formed Warrior MMA team that combined the Fighting Gym Rats and Tsunami MMA.

McCovey was the only Warrior to fight at Blue Lake, but other fighters are expected to join in soon.

Anyone interested in joining Warrior MMA can contact Ron Otremba at 460-0235 or Tracy Yates at 954-0893.
