In 1993 Steve started a new career working for the California state prison system in Centinela, Calif.; in 1994 he transferred back home to work at Pelican Bay State Prison until he retired in January 2014.

Steve enjoyed hunting and was an avid bow hunter. He also loved to camp, travel, spend time with family and friends and coach. Steve had a passion for coaching; over the past 35 years he coached men’s softball, women’s softball, youth baseball, youth wrestling and youth football. Steve loved his players and enjoyed watching them as they continued in high school sports. He also ran the chains for Del Norte High School football for 27 years.

Steve is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Leishman; sons Scott Freeman and wife Angelica of Crescent City; Dustin Leishman and wife Angie of Yelm, Wash.; Robbie Freeman and Stefanie Heckel; Derek Leishman and Leah Parkhurst, all of Crescent City; grandchildren Nickolas, Trevor, and Alexis Freeman; Destiny Leishman, Justice Smith and Patience Parkhurst; Hayden; Maddex and Reece Freeman, all of Crescent City; Donovan and Valerie Leishman of Yelm, Wash.
