Karen Fay Barkhurst, 72, peacefully went home to be with Jesus on June 24, 2014, after a courageous battle against cancer.

Born Nov. 23, 1941, in Hollywood, Karen was a 1959 graduate of Hawthorne High and lived in several cities in the South Bay of Los Angeles. In 1970 she met and married her soul mate, John Barkhurst. In 1977 they sold their auto repair business, and Karen retired from McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach. They bought some open acreage in Sun City and moved John’s parents (Theodore and Bertha Barkhurst) into a home on the property. There, they operated a nursery and later owned a restaurant. Karen was very involved in the care of John’s parents in their final years. In 1989, after a vacation to the Redwoods, John and Karen moved to Crescent City. Here, Karen worked for Del Norte County until her retirement in 2003. She played a major role in the building of Kid’s Town in Crescent City.

Karen was always looking to serve others in the community, as well as her family and friends. She helped move her mother and aunt to Crescent City so she could assist them in their final years. She cared for her husband, as he slowly succumbed to emphysema.

Beside spending time with her family, she also enjoyed playing Bunco once a month with the ladies, as well as sewing, quilting, and genealogy studies. She always looked forward to attending services at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was particularly fond of Father Adam.

Preceded in death by her husband of 43 years John W. Barkhurst, father Victor Anderson of Buena Park, Calif.; mother Margaret “Polly” (Powell) LeDuc of Crescent City; brother Joseph Roller of Ariz.
