Warriors show off what they have learned in the first week of practice in intersquad scrimmage

Friday night football was back as the Del Norte High School football teams took Mike Whalen Field for the Gatorade scrimmage. Warrior fans in attendance were treated to the first look at the school’s junior varsity and varsity football teams.

Both teams played several offensive drives with the offensive and defensive starters on the field at different times.

“We were just looking to get the kids a chance to play in front of their parents and the community,” said varsity head coach Ray Rook. “We also were able to get on film, which gives us something to look at.”

Rook said that the team is still in its developing stages as it teaches the players the basics. The team just started with full-contact drills on Thursday.

“We are only going to get better from here hopefully,” Rook said. “That is the goal.”

Although the Warriors have been busy preparing for the football season, the team, as always, has been making time to serve the local community.

One of the highlights from the first week of practice for Rook had nothing to do with the practice field. He said his favorite part of the week was watching his players do some community service by helping the Lighthouse Quilt Guild set up for their upcoming show.

“It was an honor for me to be part of that and I was proud of the young men that took part. We had about nine kids that helped with that,” Rook said. “It was great to hear the feedback from the community about the work that they did and how polite they were. We heard the same things about the taco sale here today. That, to me, is why we are here doing what we are doing.”

The Warriors will be back in action next Friday with a preseason scrimmage against Eureka. The following Friday, Aug. 30, the Warriors will welcome Piner to Mike Whalen Field for the 2014 regular season opener.
