A Brookings man is dead and another is in serious condition at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City after an accident near Wonderstump Road on Highway 101 in California late Monday night.

Delmas Baumback, 49, was driving northbound on his Harley Davidson motorcycle at about 11:30 p.m. when a southbound 1995 BMW sedan driven by Royce Fike, 56, also of Brookings, veered into his lane of traffic and struck him, according to California Highway Patrol spokesperson Brandy Gonzalez.

Baumback was pronounced dead at the scene. Fike was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital with “major” injuries to his ribs and lungs as well as lacerations on his face.

Witnesses said neither the motorcycle nor the sedan appeared to be speeding, nor is alcohol believed to be involved. An autopsy will be performed on Baumback.

This is the second accident in as many weeks in which people were killed in that area. Two weeks ago, a man died after hitting a semi-truck on the Doctor Fine bridge, about two miles from this incident.

“I wouldn’t say it’s the most we’ve had along that stretch,” Gonzalez said. “But when you get them so close together (in time). … One’s too many.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
