Obituaries: Barbara Joan McDowell(1932-2008)

Barbara Joan McDowell of Smith River passed away Sept. 30, 2008, at a local care facility of natural causes. She was 76.

She was born March 1, 1932, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of Burnett and Catherine Ada (Grist) Knowles. She was raised and educated in Brantford.

As a young woman, she married to Steven Jenkins. Two children were born of the union.

Mrs. Jenkins worked for 15 years as a fashion model in Canada.

Following a divorce, she moved to Burlington, Ontario, to be near family. She was employed as an executive secretary at an electronics firm for several years.

In the early 1970s, she became reacquainted with Donald Ernest McDowell, and in 1974, moved to Santa Barbara.

The McDowells were married on Dec. 19, 1975, and made their home in Santa Barbara until retirement in 1996, when they moved to Smith River.

In earlier days, Barbara enjoyed river fishing, loved music, and was an avid dancer of the popular styles of the day. She was an animal lover, especially of her cats.

A talented homemaker, she enjoyed crafts, cooking and baking.

She was thoughtful and loving to others, and put their needs first.

Survivors include her husband Don, of Smith River; children, Christopher Jenkins and wife Heather of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; Cameron Jenkins and wife Pamela of San Diego; Sheryl McDowell of Santa Barbara; and Scott McDowell and wife Kelly of Laguna Hills; six grandchildren, Kevin, Olivia, Bryce, Katelyn, Brianna and Brooke; and one great-granddaughter, Jade.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Wilson. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
