Lois Jean Nelson, 64, of Brookings, died May 17, 2008, at a local hospital from complications of emphysema due to cigarette smoking. She was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Vanport, Ore., to Martin and Juanita (Corbett) Nelson.

As a child, she was baptized in the Lutheran Church. Part of her childhood was spent in St. Johns, Ore., in the care of her Grandma Corbett; she fondly remembered this as one of her happiest times. She graduated from high school in Roseburg, Ore., and worked various jobs before marrying Joseph Grandy Jr. on Sept. 14, 1964, in Portland. They lived in the Portland area elsewhere on the West Coast from Seattle to San Diego.

For the last 15 years that she worked, she was a nurse's aide and private caregiver. Lois later divorced and settled in Crescent City in 1997. While there, she became a member of the Moose Lodge.

She loved dancing and singing karaoke. At age 5 she learned from her grandmother how to crochet and over her lifetime blessed her family and friends with scores of afghans and hundreds of doilies. She liked to sew and made clothing and quilts. She was also artistic and liked to paint and sketch.

Her competitive streak was expressed with energetic sparring when she practiced karate. She loved animals and the companionship of pets. She was also an avid gardener. She fulfilled a lifelong dream to visit relatives in Norway by celebrating her 60th birthday at the birthplace of her paternal grandmother.

Family members include her children, Joe Grandy of Lake Oswego, Ore., Julia Fugate and her husband Dale of Crescent City; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Grandy of Idaho; and son Terry Grandy; brothers, Bob, Tom and Jack Nelson, and William and Richard Evans; sister Betty Beier; grandchildren, Joshua Grandy, Tatiana Ruvalcaba, Cody Fugate and Tony Grandy, and two great-grandchildren, Austin and Spencer. She was preceded in death by her father and mother.

Memorials may be made to American Association for Homecare, 2011 Crystal Drive, Ste. 725, Arlington, VA 22202.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
