The Del Norte Tennis Association was recognized at a recent U.S. Tennis Association, Northern California banquet in San Ramon as their Community Tennis Association of the Year for 2007.

Each year USTA-NorCal nominates a community tennis association for this award, reported DNTA coordinator Vikki Burns

"There were a lot of CTA's nominated this year. I was especially proud that the committee voted for Del Norte as this year's award recipient," Burns said.

DNTA has worked this year to bring tennis to their community through a number of efforts.

Jane Rumiano has seen to it that tennis instruction is given at every school in Del Norte County.

Jim Piotrowski, DNTA president, continues to work to coordinate the indoor tennis play at the fairground facility.

Both Jim and Jane run the summer tennis program at the high school.

Mimi Stephens provides DNTA members with a monthly newsletter.

Each year the CTA, along with Carolyn Westbrook, help coordinate an annual CASA tournament, raising several thousand dollars for this worthwhile organization.

The group has also worked to bring adult and junior league tennis to the area.

It's not all work, though. Each summer the entire membership gets together for an all-day barbecue, tennis competition, kayaking race, volleyball match and tug-of-war.

DNTA helps build community through tennis, Burns said.

"They do a terrific job, and I am very happy they were recognized for their efforts this year as NorCal's CTA of the Year."
